Choosing a Laptop Riser for Cooling and Comfort
A laptop stand does two things at once, which is unusual value for a simple object: it raises the screen toward eye level, and it lifts the base off the desk so the intake vents underneath can actually draw air. The second effect is often larger than people expect, because most laptops take their intake air from the bottom panel.
Why a laptop on a flat desk runs hot
Intake vents on the underside sit a few millimetres above the desk on small rubber feet. On a hard desk that is barely adequate; on a soft surface — a bed, a cushion, a lap — it is effectively blocked, and temperatures climb until the processor throttles.
Raising the machine an inch or two, with open space beneath, restores the airflow that the design assumed.
Passive risers versus active coolers
A passive riser is a stand with no fans. It improves airflow by geometry, is silent, needs no power, and is enough for the overwhelming majority of machines.
An active cooler adds fans blowing upward. It helps under sustained heavy load, uses a USB port, and adds noise. For most office and general use it is unnecessary, and a passive riser plus a genuine internal clean does more.
Ventilated versus solid platforms
A mesh or slotted platform lets air pass through; a solid one blocks the area directly under the machine. If cooling is part of the reason for buying, a ventilated platform is the better choice.
Some solid stands hold the laptop only at the edges, leaving the middle open, which achieves the same thing. What does not work is a solid platform in full contact with the base of the machine.
Height and angle
If you use the laptop keyboard directly, a low angled stand of a couple of inches improves wrist position and airflow without putting the screen out of reach.
If you use an external keyboard and mouse, go much higher — the point is to bring the screen up toward eye level, which usually means five to eight inches of rise. A stand that only offers two inches cannot do this job.
Adjustable stands cover both, and the adjustment mechanism is the part to check: friction hinges loosen over time, whereas notched or locking mechanisms do not.
Stability and load
A stand holding a laptop at height has a lot of leverage on a small base. Check the stated load rating against your machine’s weight, and prefer a wide base.
Test by tapping the screen. If the whole assembly rocks, it will rock every time you touch the screen or the keyboard, and that becomes irritating quickly.
Size compatibility
Most stands quote a screen-size range, commonly 10 to 17 inches. That range describes the platform width and the lip spacing, and a heavy 17-inch machine on a stand rated to 17 inches may still be at the limit of the load rating.
Check both figures rather than one.
Material
Aluminium conducts heat away from the machine and is rigid, which is why most good stands use it. Steel is strong and heavier. ABS and other plastics are lighter and cheaper and flex more; a plastic stand with a metal core is a reasonable compromise.
Whatever the material, silicone pads where the laptop touches are essential. Bare metal against an aluminium laptop base scratches within days.
Portable stands
Folding and collapsible stands are excellent for a bag and less stable on a desk. If the stand is going to live in one place, a rigid one is better; if it travels, accept a little flex in exchange for the weight.
Check the folded thickness against your bag, and check whether the folding mechanism needs both hands to set up — a two-handed stand is a minor irritation several times a day.
What a riser does not fix
A riser will not clear a heatsink that is already clogged with dust. If a machine ran hot before and still runs hot on a stand, the problem is internal and needs cleaning.
It also does not fix a keyboard position problem on its own — raising the screen means the built-in keyboard is now at the wrong height, which is exactly why an external keyboard belongs in the same purchase.

Ports and cable clearance
Raising a laptop moves every port, and a stand with a rear lip can block cables that exit the back. Check where your power connector and display cable enter the machine against the shape of the stand.
Stands with an open rear are more flexible. Where a stand encloses the back, a right-angled adapter on the power cable usually resolves it and is worth ordering at the same time rather than discovering the problem later.
Using a closed laptop
Running a laptop closed on a vertical stand with an external screen and keyboard is a clean setup and needs one check: many machines throttle harder when closed, because the keyboard area is a heat path.
If the machine runs hot in that arrangement, a horizontal stand with the lid open — even with the built-in screen switched off — usually cools better. It takes more desk space and is often the better trade for a machine under sustained load.
