Headset Drivers and Microphone Patterns
Headset listings lead with two numbers — driver size and a surround-sound figure — and both are more marketing than specification. What actually determines whether a headset is good to wear and good to be heard through is a different, less advertised set of things.
Driver size
The driver is the small speaker in each cup, and 50 mm is a common figure. Larger drivers can move more air and often produce more bass, but size alone says almost nothing about quality — a well-engineered 40 mm driver comfortably beats a poor 50 mm one.
Treat driver size as a rough indication of the class of product rather than as a measure of performance.
What 7.1 surround means on a headset
A headset has two drivers, one per ear. It cannot physically produce eight channels. What 7.1 describes is a software process that applies filters to simulate the direction sounds would come from in a multi-speaker room.
The effect ranges from useful to distracting depending on the implementation and the content. Many people who try it turn it off for music and keep it for games with meaningful positional audio.
The important practical point: because it is software, it usually requires a specific driver on a specific operating system. Plugged into anything else, a 7.1 headset is a stereo headset.
Connection type
A 3.5 mm analogue headset works with everything that has a jack and relies on the host’s audio circuitry. A USB headset contains its own converter, which usually sounds more consistent across machines and is required for most surround processing.
USB-C headsets are increasingly common and work with modern phones and laptops. Where a single 3.5 mm plug carries both audio and microphone, a splitter is needed for a desktop with separate sockets.
Microphone patterns
The pattern describes which directions a microphone is sensitive to.
Cardioid is heart-shaped: sensitive in front, less at the sides, least behind. On a boom microphone positioned at the corner of the mouth, that means your voice is picked up strongly and the room, the keyboard and the fan behind you are noticeably reduced. It is the right pattern for a headset and it is what most decent ones use.
Omnidirectional picks up equally in all directions. It sounds natural and captures the whole room, which is why cheap earbud microphones on a cable make calls sound like a corridor.
Noise-cancelling microphones combine a cardioid pattern with electronic processing. They help with steady background noise such as a fan and do rather less with sudden noise.
Microphone position matters more than the microphone
A boom should sit about an inch from the corner of the mouth, slightly off to the side rather than directly in front. Directly in front catches plosives — the burst of air on p and b sounds — which is the harshest artefact in most calls.
Too far away and the gain has to rise, bringing the room up with it. Moving a boom two inches closer improves a call more than replacing the headset would.
Comfort, which decides everything
A headset that is uncomfortable after an hour will not be worn, whatever it sounds like. The variables are clamping force, weight and earcup material.
Memory foam with fabric covers breathes better and heats up less than leatherette, which seals better and isolates more. Glasses wearers should look specifically for softer foam, since a firm cup presses the arms of glasses into the head.
Weight over about 350 g starts to be noticeable on a long session regardless of padding.
Isolation versus awareness
Closed-back cups isolate and keep sound in, which matters in a shared space. Open-back cups sound more spacious and leak in both directions, which is fine alone in a room and unacceptable on a call in an office.
Stands and cable
A headset left on a desk gets damaged. A hanger — clamp-on, adhesive or a weighted desk stand — keeps it off the surface and out of the way of a mug.
For cable, a braided jacket and a moulded strain relief at the plug both extend life. Detachable cables are better again, since the cable is what usually fails first.

- Which connection does the machine need?
- Is surround processing tied to software you can actually run?
- Is the microphone cardioid, and does the boom adjust properly?
- Closed or open back for your room?
- Weight, and cup material for comfort.

Testing a microphone before it matters
Record thirty seconds and listen back before the call that counts. It is the only reliable way to hear what other people hear, and it catches the common problems: boom too far away, boom directly in front producing plosives, or a fan audible behind the voice.
Do it wearing the headset the way you actually wear it, not the way you adjust it for a test. Most microphone problems are position problems and they recur every time the headset goes on.
Sidetone
Sidetone plays a little of your own voice back into the earcups. It sounds like a gimmick and it is the feature that stops people shouting on calls — with closed-back cups and no sidetone, you cannot hear yourself and unconsciously raise your voice.
Where a headset or its software offers sidetone, turning it on is usually an immediate improvement for anyone who spends hours on calls, and it is worth checking for before buying if calls are the main use.
